PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM
All Participants must be at least 6 years of age, unless with instructors approval.
At each level of the YMCA Progressive Swimming Program, participants
are involved in activities related to the following five different components:
(A) Personal Safety
(B) Stroke Development
(C) Water Sports and Games
(D) Personal Growth & Fitness
(E) Rescue Awareness
POLLIWOG I
Beginner Level for those with little or no experience in the water. Participants will learn the basic skills including putting his/her face in the water, kicking, floating and gliding.
POLLIWOG II
Prerequisite: Swim across pool using front crawl with any kind of breathing. Must be comfortable in the large pool. Be able to kick and float on their front and back. Swim elementary backstroke. Participant will learn to swim across the length of the pool using front crawl with any kind of breathing. Must be comfortable in the large pool.
POLLIWOG III
Prerequisite: Swim 50 yards of front crawl with side breathing, elementary backstroke and backstroke.
GUPPY
Prerequisite: Swim 100 yds. of front crawl, elementary backstroke and backstroke. Be able to demonstrate breaststroke. Level for those who have completed Polliwog levels.
MINNOW
Prerequisite: Swim 150 yards of front crawl and backstroke. 100 yards. of elementary backstroke and 50 yards of breaststroke. Be proficient with side breathing.
FISH
Prerequisite: Swim 200 yards of front crawl and backstroke. Swim 100 yards of breaststroke.
FLYING FISH
Prerequisite: Swim 300 yards of front crawl and backstroke. Swim 200 yards of breaststroke. Be proficient in all strokes and possess the knowledge of butterfly.
SHARK
Prerequisite: Be able to demonstrate butterfly. Swim 400 yards of front crawl and backstroke. Swim 300 yards of breaststroke. After completing Shark you will be ready for swim team.
